AI Music Folk
Folk uses traditional instruments like zither and bamboo flute. Lyrics with a folk flavor give more natural results.

MuziAI's Vietnamese folk (dân ca) section has two AI-sung sample songs, both with Vietnamese lyrics, both at 72 BPM and both in F major: “Hò Trên Sông Hương” (a male and female duet) and “Cánh diều tuổi thơ” (female voice). The takeaway: Folk has the longest songs in the library (median 300 seconds) and the second-sparsest harmony (0.65 chords per bar, above only lo-fi), but each of those figures comes from a quirk of one song rather than from the genre as a whole. These figures describe MuziAI's samples, not the rules of Vietnamese folk music.
Measured profile
Key, tempo, bar counts and chords come from the sheet music the singing model writes for itself before singing. The comparison column is bolero, the nearest neighbour: also Vietnamese-only, also 72 BPM, also with one duet.
| Metric | Folk (2 songs) | Bolero (2 songs) |
|---|---|---|
| BPM: lowest / median / highest | 72 / 72 / 72 | 72 / 72 / 72 |
| Key | F major 2 | F major 1, G major 1 |
| Length (seconds): shortest / median / longest | 241 / 300 / 360 | 250 / 251 / 252 |
| Bars (median) | 97 | 76 |
| Chords per bar (median) | 0.65 | 1.10 |
| Melodic range (semitones, median) | 23 | 26 |
| Voice | duet 1, female 1 | male 1, duet 1 |
| Lyric language | Vietnamese 2 | Vietnamese 2 |
72 BPM is the creator's “Slow” setting and the most common tempo in the library: 28 of 58 samples sit exactly there, including all 13 ballads. A median range of 23 semitones puts Folk among the widest melodies, behind only bolero (26) and funk/disco (24). So MuziAI's folk and bolero match on tempo and melodic span but part ways on harmony: bolero changes chord 1.10 times per bar, folk 0.65.
How MuziAI builds this genre
Choosing Folk adds “Vietnamese folk, traditional instruments, dan tranh zither, bamboo flute” to the style prompt. The model knows these instruments only at a basic level. Both samples also ticked Zither and Bamboo Flute in the instrument picker, which simply names them a second time in the prompt. Beyond that:
- “Hò Trên Sông Hương”: Peaceful mood (peaceful, calm, gentle), call and response, male and female duet.
- “Cánh diều tuổi thơ”: Nostalgic mood (nostalgic, wistful, bittersweet), vocal runs (melismatic), female voice.
Inside the sample songs
“Hò Trên Sông Hương” is the odd one out: the sheet the model wrote for it contains no chord symbols at all. Only three songs in the whole library look like that (the other two are the lo-fi “Ban Công Hoàng Hôn” and the acoustic “Sleep, Little Star”), and all three are at 72 BPM. Instead, its melody spans 29 semitones, tied for the widest in the library. The song has nine sections, slips a 4-bar interlude after the first chorus, and trims the third verse to 4 bars. A piece carried almost entirely by melody and call and response suits hò, a Vietnamese folk style built on a lead singer's call and a group's answer.
“Cánh diều tuổi thơ” has clear harmony: the loop Dm Bb C Dm F Gm Am Dm circles D minor, the relative minor of F major, at 1.29 chords per bar. The surprise is structural. Its final chorus stretches to 64 bars, more than half of the song's 121, which is why it runs 360 seconds, the longest song in the library. Set it aside and “Hò Trên Sông Hương” lasts 241 seconds, right next to the two bolero samples (250 and 252). The genre's 0.65 chords per bar is likewise just the midpoint of 0 and 1.29.
How to get a better song
- Write lyrics with a folk flavour. Lines shaped like ca dao or lục bát verse tend to sound more natural. The AI lyric writer can help if your idea names the verse form.
- For a call and response feel, pick the male and female duet plus Call and response, as in “Hò Trên Sông Hương”. With that option on, the AI lyric writer adds bracketed echo lines to the chorus.
- For a tighter song, watch the last chorus: it can balloon, as the 64 bars in “Cánh diều tuổi thơ” show. If a result runs longer than you want, generate again, or reuse the sheet of “Hò Trên Sông Hương” (241 seconds) with “Sing new lyrics to this sheet”. That sheet has no chords, so what carries over is mainly key, tempo and overall length.
- Stay on the Slow tempo. Both samples are at 72 BPM, and the library has no folk song at Medium or Fast yet.
- Check the Vietnamese diction. In MuziAI's machine listening test, 74% of Vietnamese lyrics were recognised, against 95% for English. If a line gets swallowed, run another take and keep the clearer one.
Limits
Two songs is a very small sample, and both share key, tempo and language, so the effect of each setting can't be separated. There is no solo male folk sample yet. We don't know whether a chordless sheet is typical of folk on MuziAI or a one-off, since the same thing happens in lo-fi and acoustic. Nor do these numbers say how authentic the zither or bamboo flute sound; for that, listen in the sample library and then make your own.
